Overview of the System

Koryu (ancient ways) Control & Restraining Techniques℠ is a method born from the Koryukan Style of Hsin Lu Chuan Shu Tong that uses training of the ancient ways to teach control by joint and body manipulation.  In a hostile environment, the obvious objective is to stop the threat, gain control, and neutralize the danger.  This system uses dynamic methods of expression that access awareness, body language and movement along with weapons skills and natural task transfer in order to achieve just that.

Koryu Control & Restraining Techniques℠ uses offense, combative flow, and human anatomy and response as the principle ideologies for its defense strategy in counter assault tactics.  Professor Sal Moralez developed the methodology in 1991 as an alternative method for self defense in the training of law enforcement officers, civilians, martial artists and those in the security trade.

Koryu Control & Restraining Techniques℠ is available in a number of training modules for use by law enforcement, military defense, security organizations, and individuals interested in survival and defensive tactics.  The system employs a weapon’s approach that in itself immediately increases the required proficiency level of reality-based, combative tactical movement.  It teaches clear-cut angles and direction of attack and defense, combative concepts and principles, and body alignment control that compromises an attacker’s balance, both mentally and physically.

The Koryu Control & Restraining Techniques℠ is a method that embodies a wide range of functional counter assault tactics sharpened for use with, and against, various weapons.  The training includes an understanding and application of ancient martial arts doctrines, movement that sets up a logic chain, working with primal responses, and reality-based combative strategies.

A dynamic component of the Koryu Control & Restraining Techniques℠ system is the offensive mind set it trains that begins with trained recognition of cues that signal an impending assault.  The Koryu Control & Restraining Techniques℠ method exceeds the generally accepted application of the gross motor skills concept by going one step further in its procedure to a commanding and decisive utilization of task transfer skills.  This principle makes it possible to achieve maximum use of full power, and employs body weight and momentum to insure a positive outcome.

The Koryu Control & Restraining Techniques℠ delivery system is based on the natural movement action of the human anatomy and its reflexes.  It makes full use of these as the primary weapons of the body.  An individual learns to gain and maintain the constant forward pressure necessary to provide for a swift and efficient resolution to an altercation.  In essence, Koryu Control & Restraining Techniques℠ trains the warrior method and the warrior as one.  The offensive aims to:

    • Unbalance
    • Take control of, and
    • Dominate an aggressor

The Koryu Control & Restraining Techniques℠ relies on natural principles.  Instruction allows for anyone – regardless of physical condition, gender or size – to apply the concepts  effectively and under a myriad of dangerous situations.  It is simple to learn, and easy to practice.

Its creator, Professor Sal Moralez, has an extensive career in law enforcement—1978 to the present time—and an impressive training and teaching record in the martial arts—44 years experience including two 10th Degree Black Belts and the development of a system that has received international recognition and acceptance. Professor Moralez brings unparalleled skill, know-how and experience to the self defense forum.

He has been a member of the Police Tactics Instructors of America (P.T.I.) since 1998, and a trainer for Use of Force Issues and Defensive Tactics for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission since 2002.  Inclusively, he was designated as the Use of Force expert for the TABC in 2009.  Professor Moralez has trained:
